Chaffinch and mouse micromosaic box
A 18th century continental faux tortoishell circular snuff box with yellow metal mounts, basket weave mould body, with hinged lid inset with a roman micromosaic roundel depicting a bird, a chaffinch on a tree branch protecting an egg filled nest from a mouse.
Attributable to the master mosaicist Giacomo Raffaelli (1753-1836).

Attached underneath the lid bears a label: "This box was given to Ms A. B. Lewis August 1910 as a keepsake from Miss Lathe of Dover who died in her 106 year April 1923, it was given to her on her 17th Birthday. So this box is nearly 100 years old. A. B. Lewis April 1924"
