A late 18th early 19th century, circa 1790-1810, continental tortoiseshell circular snuff box with yellow metal mounts, the lid inset with a roman micromosaic roundel depicting symbols and allegories of love and friendship typical of the romantic period. The dog on a leash, symbol of fidelity; the altar symbol of sacrifice; the crossed hands, symbol of friendship; the snake biting its tail or Ouroboros, the symbol of eternity and unity; the two doves, symbols of Venus and therefore love.
